C‑BLUES at the World Ocean Summit: Advancing Blue Carbon’s Role in Climate Finance

C‑BLUES was proud to be represented at the 13th Annual World Ocean Summit in Montreal, where project coordinator  Richard Bellerby participated in the high‑level panel “Unlocking Blue Carbon’s Role in Climate Finance.” The session brought together experts from science, policy, and finance to discuss how blue carbon ecosystems can become a stronger pillar of global climate solutions.

During the discussion, panelists emphasized that unlocking the potential of blue carbon requires rapid progress in coastal governance, regulatory processes, and robust crediting systems. These foundations are essential for creating confidence in science‑informed, future‑smart investments that support the conservation and restoration of blue carbon ecosystems.

Blue carbon habitats—such as seagrass meadows, mangrove forests, saltmarshes and macroalgae —provide far more than carbon sequestration. They underpin water quality, support biodiversity and fisheries, protect coasts, and deliver climate resilience benefits that are increasingly recognized in global finance discussions. Strengthening the link between scientific evidence and emerging finance mechanisms is central to ensuring these ecosystems receive the protection and investment they urgently need.

C‑BLUES continues to contribute scientific leadership and evidence to inform nature‑based climate solutions, and we are pleased to have been part of this important global dialogue.”
